MTN Mobile Money: How To Transfer Money in Nigeria With Your Mobile Phone

What is MobileMoney?
MobileMoney is the fast, safe, easy, convenient and affordable way to send and receive money across the country and pay for your goods and services using your MTN Mobile phone.

MobileMoney is offered to you by our partner banks Guaranty Trust Bank, Fortis Micro Finance Bank and powered by MTN.
To enjoy the service, go through the following steps:
  • Register your SIM card, to confirm if your SIM is registered type ‘’reg’’ in a text message and send to 789, you will receive a notification message confirming the status of your SIM registration.
  • Dial *500#
  • Reply with the right answer to the questions that follow.
  • Answer each question as accurate as possible because anytime you forget your account PIN, these questions will be used to authenticate you before granting access to select another PIN.
  • Enter your agent phone number e.g 2348163408552 or Reply with skip to continue if you are not been registered by an agent.
  • Choose your preferred bank from the list of banks (GTB and other banks).
  • After you  responded with your preferred bank, you will receive a text message containing your activation  token ( 6 digits alphanumeric)  e.g 2211OT
  • Proceed by dialling *501# to activate your account.
 Activating your MobileMoney Account
  • Dial *501#
  • Enter your activation token ( 6 digits alphanumeric)  e.g 2211OT
  • Choose a four digit account PIN e.g 4357
  • Repeat the PIN to confirm that you entered it correctly the first time.
  • You will receive a welcome text message from Mmoney. Your MobileMoney account is ready for use.
  • Dial *501# to use the service.
                Performing Transactions using USSD
  • To send money to a MobileMoney subscriber
    • Dial *501#
    • Select Send Money by typing 1 and send.
    • Options 1,2,3 will be displayed
    • Select Mobile User by typing 1 and send.
    • Enter receiver’s mobile number
    • Repeat the mobile number
    • Enter the amount you wish to send
    • Enter a reference, e.g. “Gift from Peter” (optional)
    • Confirm the details supplied
    • Enter your Account PIN
    • You will receive a message on your phone confirming the completion of the transaction

  • To send money to Non-MobileMoney subscribers
    • Dial *501#
    • Select Send Money by typing 1 and send.
    • Options 1,2,3 will be displayed
    • Select others by typing 2 and send.
    • From the display screen,
    • Enter the amount you wish to send
    • Select a four-digit secret code
    • Repeat the secret code
    • Confirm the details supplied
    • Enter your Account PIN
    • You will receive an SMS containing the secret code and a Token (a randomly generated twelve-digit number)
    • Pass on the Token and the secret code to the receiver. Thereafter, the receiver goes to a MobileMoney Agent to cash out the money.

To save a MobileMoney account number as your favourite receiver
    • Dial *501#
    • Select Manage Account by typing 6 and send.
    • From the display screen,
    • Select Manage Favourite by typing 3 and send.
    • Select Add Favourite by typing 1 and send.
    • Enter the Name of your favourite
    • Enter your Favourite’s mobile number.
    • Repeat the mobile number
    • Enter your Account PIN
    • You will receive a message on your phone confirming the completion of this activity  
  • To send Money to a favourite
    • Dial *501#
    • Select Send Money by typing 1 and send.
    • Options 1,2,3 will be displayed
    • Select Favourites by typing 3 and send.
    • From the display screen,
    • Select Favourites by Name or Find option through typing 1 or 2 respectively and send.
    • Select a favourite
    • Enter the amount you wish to send
    • Key in a reference, e.g. “Gift from Peter” (optional)
    • Confirm the details supplied
    • Enter your Account PIN
    • You will receive a message on your phone confirming the completion of the transaction

  • To buy MTN Airtime
    • Dial *501#
    • Choose Buy MTN Airtime by typing 3 and send.
    • From the displayed screen, type 1 and send.
    • Enter the amount of Airtime you wish to buy
    • Enter  the beneficiary’s mobile number (no entry is required if your own mobile phone is the beneficiary)
    • Repeat the mobile number entered in step 4 above
    • Confirm the details supplied
    • Enter your Account PIN
    • You will receive a message on your phone confirming the completion of the transaction
Deposit Cash into your  MobileMoney account for Electronic Money ( Cash in)
    • Visit any MobileMoney agent
    • Tell the agent how much you wish to deposit into your MobileMoney account
    • Give the agent your phone number ( i.e your MobileMoney account number)
    • The agent will to up your account with virtual money (Electronic money) for free.
    • You will receive a text message that your account has been funded with the amount you wish to deposit into your account.
    • Check your account balance to confirm money has entered your account
    • Hand over cash to the agent.
To Enable cash-out money from your account
    • Visit any MobileMoney Cash-Out agent
    • Tell the agent how much you wish to cash-out
    • From your Phone
    • Dial *501#
    • Select Allow Cash-Out by typing 5 and send.
    • Select ‘Cash-Out ON’ by typing 1 and send.
    • Enter your Account PIN
    • Cash out money is enabled.
    • Follow the other instruction to withdraw amount from an agent.
    • Supply your mobile number to the agent
    • Await a confirmation prompt from the system (sent by the agent to your phone)
    • Click ‘Ok’ when the confirmation prompt arrives on your phone
    • Click  ‘Yes’ to approve the cash-out
    • Enter your account PIN
    • You will receive a message confirming the success of the cash-out along with your remaining balance after the transaction.
    • Receive the cash from the agent
  • To check your account Balance
    • Dial *501#
    • Choose Manage Account by typing 6 and send.
    • From the display screen,
    • To Check Balance, type 1 and send.
    • Enter your account PIN
    • Account balance information will be displayed.
  • To view your account Statement
    • Dial *501#
    • Choose Manage Account by typing 6 and send.
    • From the display screen,
    • To View Account Statement, type 2 and send.
    • Enter your account PIN
    • Account Statements for 5 previous transactions will be displayed.

  • To delete a number that is saved as your Favourite Receiver
    • Dial *501#
    • Choose Manage Account by typing 6 and send.
    • From the display screen,
    • Select Manage Favourite by typing 3 and send.
    • Select Delete Favourite by typing 2 and send.
    • Enter Name or Find
    • Confirm Deletion
    • Enter Account PIN
    • You will get a display on your phone confirming the completion of the task
  • To change your account PIN
    • Dial *501#
    • Choose Manage Account by typing 6 and send.
    • From the display screen,
    • Select Change Acct PIN by typing 4 and send.
    • Enter your current account PIN
    • Enter a new account PIN
    • Repeat  the new account PIN
    • You will receive a confirmation upon completion.
  • To link your MobileMoney debit card to your account
    • Dial *501#
    • Choose Manage Account by typing 6 and send.
    • From the display screen,
    • Select Bank Card by typing 5 and send.
    • Select Link Bank Card by typing 1 and send.
    • Enter your debit card Number
    • Repeat the debit Card Number
    • Enter your account PIN
    • You will receive a message on your phone confirming the completion of the task.
To Turn MobileMoney debit card on through your Phone
    • Dial *501#
    • Choose Manage Account by typing 6 and send.
    • From the display screen,
    • Select Bank Card by typing 5 and send.
    • Select Bank Card On by typing 2 and send.
    • Enter Account PIN
    • Repeat the debit Card Number
    • Enter your account PIN
    • You will get a display on your phone confirming the completion of the task.
To Turn MobileMoney debit card OFF through your Phone
    • Dial *501#
    • Choose Manage Account by typing 6 and send.
    • From the display screen,
    • Select Bank Card by typing 5 and send.
    • Select Bank Card OFF by typing 3 and send.
    • Enter Account PIN
    • Repeat the debit Card Number
    • Enter your account PIN
    • You will get a display on your phone confirming the completion of the task.
Doing Transaction on the internet
You can perform MobileMoney transactions from anywhere using the internet:
    • Goto the MobileMoney website, www.mymobilemoneyng.com
    • Click on customer log on tab.
    • Enter your mobile number.
    • Click on ‘Log on’. This will trigger a “six digit number” display on your web screen; note this number
    • Dial *501#
    • Choose Manage Account by typing 6 and send
    • Type 6 and Send to Select My web log in
    • Enter  the six - digit number within 60 seconds to avoid time out
    • Enter your account PIN
    • You will receive a message on your phone confirming the completion of the task
    Dial the MobileMoney Call Center
    • Dial *501#
    • Type 7 on your phone and Select My web log in
    • Enter call center number 118.
